Erasures & Overlays

Yves Gourmelon returns with recent works for an exhibition from June 1 to 14, 2024.

Opening Saturday June 1st at 6:30 p.m.

Having come to painting through the practice of theatre, I am exhibiting for the third time at OPEN

SPACE.

This exhibition includes semi-abstract paintings and wooden panels and some collages, figurative paintings and watercolors.

I am guided only by a disordered and noisy hand which only calms down after many erasures or superimpositions.

Figuration and abstraction are elements of the same source: visible and invisible reality, the real and unreal world.

Intimidated by the blank canvas, I use it little, and reserve the blank sheet for the creation of watercolors which has produced, through repetition and the years, a slow, winding and unfinished education of the hand and the use of colors.

Obsessed with recovery and transformation, I use all sorts of supports, often already painted. Sometimes I save a painting, then it joins my collection, sometimes I transform it slightly, sometimes I divert it, sometimes I cover it (when nothing has caught my attention) or else enhance or attenuate certain features to make a work of my liking.
